2018 Nissan Note e-POWER Medalist in Kenya
Let’s be honest, with fuel prices being a hot topic from Nairobi to Mombasa, we’re all looking for that perfect car: one that’s super fuel efficient, affordable to own and doesn’t feel like a penalty box.
What is Nissan e-POWER?
The wheels are only driven by a powerful electric motor from the Nissan Leaf. This gives you that instant, silent and thrilling acceleration you get from a high-end EV.
The small and efficient 1200cc petrol engine under the bonnet has zero connection to the wheels. Its sole purpose is to run quietly in the background like a small generator charging the battery that powers the electric motor.
The Driving Experience
This is its superpower. When a gap opens up in Nairobi traffic, you get instant response. No lag, no waiting for the engine to kick down. We’ve found this makes city driving much less stressful.
You can do most of your driving, including slowing down for roundabouts, with one pedal. It’s so smooth.
In our own real-world tests around Ruiru and on the Thika Superhighway, we get 25-30 km/l. Your trips to the petrol station will be a rare occasion.
The Luxury in Nissan Note e-Power
The part-leather seats, higher quality dashboard materials and leather-wrapped steering wheel make it feel like a car from a class above.
This model comes with a 360-degree Around View Monitor. It’s like having a drone’s eye view of your car, making parking in tight spots at TRM or Garden City a breeze. It also has safety features like lane departure warning and forward emergency braking.
You’ll notice the 15-inch alloy wheels and subtle chrome accents that clearly identify it as the top-spec Medalist model.
Demerits of Nissan Note e-power medalists
While it handles the motorway with ease, the 1.2L engine has to work hard to provide power for sustained high speed (110-120km/h) driving and the sound becomes more noticeable. Its genius lies in the 0-100 km/h range.* It’s a very spacious hatchback, good for four adults or a small family. But if you carry five adults plus luggage for upcountry trips, the boot space might feel a bit constrained compared to a larger wagon or SUV.
The petrol engine will sometimes turn on by itself to charge the battery even when you are stationary. The first time this happens, it can be a surprise! It’s completely normal but something to be aware of.
