The X5 is available in two trim levels. These are the xLine and M Sport trims.

Its main competitors include the Audi Q7, Mercedes-Benz GLE, Porsche Cayenne, Volvo XC90, and Range Rover Sport.

For an even more luxurious experience, the X5 offers the M Sport Package and other premium packages as well.

Engine and Performance

The X5 offers powerful turbocharged engines including two petrol engines and two diesel engines, all with standard mild hybrid technology. One plug-in hybrid is also available as an option for drivers.

The petrol engines include the new models, the M60i, with a 4.4-litre twin turbo V8 engine, and the range-topping X5 M Competition. The M60i produces 530 hp and 750 Nm of torque, and it can also do a 0-62 mph time of 4.3 seconds. There’s also the monstrous X5 M Competition which has 625 hp and cuts the time down to 3.8 seconds. If this is the kind of speed that you’d prefer, be ready for this X5’s acceleration because it’ll have you pinned to your seat.

The two diesel engines in the BMW X5 are the xDrive 30d and the xDrive 40d, both powered by 3-0litre 6-cylinder engines. The most popular range is the xDrive 30d, which produces 294 hp and can go from 0-62 mph in 6.1 seconds. It is also faster than the Audi Q8. The more powerful diesel is the xDrive 40d, and it ups the power to 352 hp with a useful boost in torque too. It can do a 0-62 mile sprint in just 5.5 seconds, which makes it quite a rapid SUV.

The BMW X5 doesn’t have an electric variant yet, but the xDrive 50e is a plug-in hybrid electrical vehicle (PHEV) with a 3.0-litre petrol engine. It also has a 25.7 kWh battery pack and a powerful electric motor. This enables incredibly swift performance offering 489 hp, while managing a 0-62 mile sprint in just 4.9 seconds.  No matter which engine you choose, all variants offer optimum performance.

BMW X5 Trims

The BMW X5 offers two trim options. The xLine trim and the M Sport trim. The only xLine trim available is the entry-level xDrive 30d. The M Sport, however, includes the xDrive 40d, the xDrive 50e, the M60i, and the stand-alone X5 M Competition.

The xLine is a mid-range trim that has features like leather upholstery, heated front and rear seats, 19-inch wheels and ambient lighting.

The M Sport features, however,  have a more aggressive and improved kit list. They include:

  • Sportier body styling
  • Larger 20-inch wheels
  • Gloss black exterior instead of polished metal
  • M Sport steering wheel, seats, and leather upholstery
  • M Sport exhaust system with chrome tailpipes

All trims have the following features:

  • LED headlights
  • Leather upholstery
  • Heated front seats
  • 12.3 inch touchscreen infotainment system
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Rearview cameras
  • Parking sensors
  • Cruise control
  • Automatic gearbox
  • All-wheel drive
  • Electric tailgate

BMW X5 Features

Exterior Design

The new BMW X5 has large, illuminated kidney grilles which complement the front bumper and slimmer headlights. This gives the X5 an overall sleek and modern look.

Interior Design

The X5 interior design has a luxurious look thanks to its sleek finishes, chrome garnishes, neat button consoles, and visually appealing trim. The leather upholstery wrapping the cabin is vegan-friendly and makes the X5 look plush and classy. The dashboard looks more modern and fresh and is soft to the touch. It also has a curved digital display with crisp and clear graphics. The cabin has a cleaner look with the reduced button count. The panoramic sunroof and the large windows also help give the cabin a sense of airiness, which adds to a more classy look.

Comfort, space and practicality

The seats are delightful with excellent cushioning and support. The passengers can also enjoy heated seats, which only used to be a luxury for the people in the front. There are more USB ports as well. Since the interior is wide, it doesn’t constrict tall people, so there will be no rubbing shoulders with other passengers. The legroom can be a little snug for them but not to the point of utter discomfort.

Since the interior is also wider and higher, there’s all the interior space a modern family could want. With a seven-seat option, it provides an optional third row of seats making it an excellent family wagon. The seats aren’t as spacious as the middle-row, so they are best reserved for small passengers.

There is a wide armrest at the front seat that has space underneath for storage and also a tray where you can keep your phone. The glove box is also a decent size and the door pockets can be used to hold small bottles.

BMW X5 Boot space
BMW X5 Spacious boot space

The boot space is quite practical with 650 litres worth of space. When you fold the middle row seats, the space increases to 1860 litres. There’s also space underneath that can be used to carry extra items. Unfortunately, it disappears when you choose the xDrive 50e because of the battery pack. This reduces the space available by 500 litres. There’s also a hands-free electric split tailgate which makes it easier to open the boot and can be quite useful for loading large items.

Technology

BMW X5 Infotainment display
BMW X5 Infotainment display features

The BMW X5’s latest curved display holds both the infotainment system and the driver’s display. The 12.3-inch digital display and the 14.9-inch touchscreen offer crisp graphics and come with a very sensible interface with shortcut icons on the bottom of the screen. The system is very intuitive and easy to use. You can control the main screen through touch, a rotary iDrive controller on the centre console, or through your voice.

The BMW X5 also operates on the iDrive 8 operating system and the built-in navigation is great with offering clear instructions. The X5 also comes with integrated Android Auto and Apple CarPlay phone connectivity. The BMW smartphone app can also be useful for sending navigational destinations to the car, as well as pre-heating the cabin.

The Technology Plus pack offers Harman Kardon surround sound stereo, a head-up display, and gesture Control.

Fuel consumption and economy

The xDrive 30d manages 39 mpg while the xDrive 40d has 37.7 mpg and both offer Co² emissions between 144-154 g/km. These diesel engines are for those short commutes during the week and longer trips during the weekends. Therefore, they are a great choice for you if you prioritize fuel economy and want a capable and comfortable SUV.

The xDrive 50e has a battery-powered electric motor to provide 313.9 mpg, but it’s only achievable if you keep the battery charged for a lot of electric running. On one charge alone, it can offer an excellent 66-mile electric range, thus lowering running costs. The 50e also has 0-215 g/km CO² emissions and is more affordable to run than the other BMW X5s.

If running costs are not as much of a concern as performance, the M60i and the M Competition are the best for you. With the 530hp M60i, it offers a fuel economy of 24.4 mpg, while the M Competition offers 13 mpg. These two models offer supercar levels of performance but with the drawback of having an unimpressive fuel economy.

Handling

BMW X5 On the road
BMW X5 On the road outlook

he BMW X5 is remarkably composed for a heavy SUV. It doesn’t feel as lumbering as the other SUVs and has quite athletic handling. It has a firm grip on the road and a beautifully weighted steering wheel. It can also maneuver rather well in tight and narrow spaces, aided by the high driving position and excellent forward visibility. The X5 also has great off-road capabilities with Four-wheel drive and driving modes that adapt to drive settings.

The X5 may offer a firm ride but it has great body control making it a very stable and reassuring drive, even on twisty roads. Air suspension comes standard on the xDrive 50e and it positively floats over bumps and other imperfections, making it a soothing long-distance companion. It comes as an option on all the X5s at an extra cost, and it’s quite worth it, since it maintains a smooth and cozy ride.

There are also standard parking sensors all around the BMW X5 and also a surround-view camera. This makes it less of a hassle to get into an adequately sized parking space. The M Sport models come with a standard M Adaptive suspension sports setup. This gives the X5 a more sporty and nimble feel with a firm grip on the road and reassuringly tight body control.

When it comes to noise on the road, there’s very little wind noise. However, the xDrive 30d has a throaty engine that doesn’t fade away even in a cruise. The M60i sounds aggressive when you accelerate hard but the sound is drowned out while cruising. The xDrive 50e luckily whispers quiet when running on electric power.

Safety

The BMW X5 has an impressive 5-star crash safety rating from the Euro NCAP. It scored 89% for protecting adult occupants, 86% for protecting children, 75% for protecting pedestrians, and 75% for its safety assistance systems.

The X5 comes with a generous list of safety features which include:

  • Airbags for front occupants
  • Curtain airbags to protect the heads of those in the middle row seats
  • Attentiveness Assistant to monitor the driver
  • Full LED lighting in the front and rear
  • Front collision warning
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Active Cruise Control
  • Speed limit display
  • Tire-pressure sensors

The X5 also offers an optional Driver Assistant Professional Pack which adds other features that you can opt to pay for. They include:

  • Automatic speed limit assistant
  • Cross-traffic warning
  • Crossroads warning with city braking function
  • Lane-keeping assistant with active side collision protection
  • Steering and lane control assistant

Conclusion

The BMW X5 is an excellent choice if you are seeking a comfortable, luxurious and technologically advanced SUV. While it may have some drawbacks like the price and noise levels, its strengths greatly outweigh its weaknesses. It offers an overall premium package with its high-end materials, spacious interior, powerful engines, and is great for families as well.
